Scottish Art - Paintings of England, Too:
Stonehenge Standing Stone Circle

by D. Bruce Bennett

Stonehenge Sunset

Yes. Yes. We know the ever-popular Stonehenge Standing Stone Circle isn't in Scotland, but it is firmly planted on land once occupied by the mysterious Celtic people. So, there you go. We're still on target.

Standing stone circles can be quite . . . well . . . gray (see Gray-Day Stonehenge, for instance), but not this selection from our paintings of England. People were quite taken with the intensity of the colors of this Stonehenge sunset scene when we displayed it at our regional highland games.

In a marked departure from most of his other paintings on watercolor stock, Bruce chose deep midnight blue melting into just a hint of intense green, and then on into the brilliant gold and orange glow of a late sunset.

Because of the color and intensity of the painting, we've chosen a very soft, unobtrusive blue mat to compliment the indigo sky. (Some monitors may show a faint pinkish tinge, but this mat really is an ever-so-soft blue.) A thin black frame subtly picks up the black of the foreground. In this framing case, less is better.

Have someone on your gift list who's spent some time studying about the standing stone circles of England and Scotland - or would, if they had the time? They need this on their wall. Have you visited Stonehenge yourself, but your photos show the fence around it, the tourists, and other bits and bobs? Then maybe "Stonehenge Sunset" belongs on your wall, instead.
