Commissioned Scottish Art:
Stirling Castle

by D. Bruce Bennett

Stirling Castle – Remembered

Ah, Stirling Castle. Who hasn't heard of the Gateway to the Highlands, hotly contested and fought over for centuries? But we'll let Undiscovered Scotland do what it does best – tell you all about the history and mystery of this famous castle.

Airthrey Castle during 1980s

(Click for larger view of Stirling Castle – Remembered)

Meanwhile, we'll focus on Bruce's landscape painting of it, commissioned by a client who attended Stirling University in the early 1980s. It's her companion piece to Airthrey Castle – Remembered, matching Airthrey in size and style. While she wanted Airthrey painted pretty much the way it appeared when she passed it daily as a student, she decided to have Bruce paint Stirling Castle from one of our 2001 photos.

Good choice, as it appears Historic Scotland and the City of Stirling completed A LOT of well-placed, carefully manicured landscaping during the 30 years since our client lived there. Compared to the way it looks today Stirling Castle looked like the proverbial red-headed stepchild in the 1980s.

But that was then: this is now. Now you – and our client – see its western side high above a small forest of lush foliage and trees with spring-green pastureland in the foreground. Our client wanted it painted with the same weak blue, spring sky to match the seasonal sky of its companion, Airthrey Castle. She also specified just enough architectural details to identify the castle, but not so many that they trumped the overall view and feeling of the painting. Was she happy with this version of Stirling Castle? See for yourself.

Though we've sold at least two other versions of Stirling Castle, both dramatically different from Stirling Castle – Remembered, this is the first one that's made it to our website. Our bad, as we're sorry this is the only example we have to show you. If a painting of Stirling Castle is on your wish list, check out our client's proofing page to see how this commission progressed, and then give us a shout. And remember, we have several of our own photos, many of which show architectural details of it.
