Scottish Art - Prints of England, Too:
Skeldale House and Scottie Terrier
by D. Bruce Bennett
Skeldale House Scottie
Are any of the people on your gift list - or maybe you, yourself - a sucker for Scottie dogs? Better yet, are you a fan of James Herriot's books about his life as a veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales of England? "Yes" and "yes"? Then your search is over. Help them - or yourself - remember this lover of "all creatures great and small" with this inexpensive English art print.

If you're a James Herriot fan, then you know the "Darrowby" of his books is actually the bustling market town of Thirsk, where Alf Wight, the "real" Herriot, practiced and where the germ for his books took root.
This timeworn brick and bright red door form the front of Herriot's surgery, named "Skeldale House" in his books. Notice the plaques to the right. They display the names of Alf and his real-life partner Donald Sinclair ("Siegfried Farnon" in Herriot's books). Located on Kirkgate in Thirsk, just up from the parish church of St. Mary's, "Skeldale House" appears in life much as it does here (with just a little artistic license taken, of course).
The Scottie terrier dog? Well, truth be told, he wasn't there when we shot the photo Bruce worked from, but he's certainly the appropriately "small" part of "All Creatures Great and Small," dont you think?
