Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Scottish Crow

by D. Bruce Bennett

Scottish Crow in First Morning Light

Crows have been flying in and out of Scottish and Irish folk stories – some of them real whoppers – for centuries. Probably the biggest whopper of all and the best known is the Highland tale of a crow who married a farmer's daughter. As his reward to her for choosing to marry an ugly crow, he morphed into a handsome man by day and back to a crow at night. (We warned you they were whoppers.)

There are also stories linking crows to the fairies of the Scottish Highlands and Ireland. In other Scottish folk tales, Scottish shepherds make offerings to crows in an effort to keep them from attacking their sheep. We could go on, but you get the picture: crows have been an important part of Celtic culture for a very long time.

In this Scottish Crow in First Morning Light, Bruce (a crow aficionado ever since his pet-crow days as a ten-year-old) has painted a crow with morning light touching its wing tips with an iridescent pink glow. It's a fairly radical departure from Bruce's usual style, with slight "waves" of light blue on the blue sky background, visually showing the flapping movement of the crow's wings.

Are you descended from the Crow (or Crowe) clan in England or Ireland? If your Crow heritage originates in Scotland, you probably already know that the Crow surname is a sept of Clan Ross. As someone with Crow lineage, maybe you need this light-and-bright, stunning crow on your wall as a reminder of your Crow heritage? Or maybe you just like crows, and that's why you need it on your wall?
