Scottish Art - Prints of Scotland:
Scottish Salmon Fishing Flies

by D. Bruce Bennett

Scottish Salmon Fishing Flies

If you've clicked to this page, you must be a fly fisherman/woman or know someone who is. You probably don't need us to tell you that Scottish fishing flies didn't become very colorful until Victorian times. In the later 20th century, they gradually became more practical and less colorful. Bruce has painted three old favorites from that earlier, more colorful era: Jock Scot(t), Hairy Mary, and Mar Lodge.

Prints of Scotland: 3 Scottish salmon fishing flies

As you see, we've grouped them altogether, each in its own fine-line box and name in elegant type below the box. Image area is 8"w. x 10"h, with additional margins if you’d like to give the flies a little more "breathing room." Printed on heavy stock with watercolor-paper texture, this Scottish art print a classy gift for those fly fishermen/women on your gift list.

Did you fish the Tweed and Tay, only to have the big one get away? Still want a reminder of your Scottish fishing holiday? Then you can't afford to let this deal get away. $15 for a Scottish fishing flies print like this?! And never mind your fisherman/woman friends; hang it on your own wall. You know. On the spot where the big one, fresh from the taxidermist, was supposed to hang.

Take a closer look at each of them.

Prints of Scotland: Jock Scot Victorian Scottish salmon fishing fly
Jock Scot(t)
Named for the man who designed it in 1845, this is probably the most famous of all Scottish salmon flies. Scot(t) served Lord John Scott of Kirkbank on the Tweed as Fisherman for twenty years.

Prints of Scotland: Hairy Mary Scottish salmon fishing fly
Hairy Mary
Johnny Reidpath, an Inverness tackle merchant, supposedly created this early, simple hair-wing pattern around 1950. It became popular during the 1960s, especially on northern rivers, like the Ness and Conon.

Prints of Scotland: Mar Lodge Scottish salmon fishing fly
Mar Lodge
Named after a fishing lodge, this classic Scottish salmon fly was used predominately on the River Dee in Aberdeenshire.

Jock Scott, Hairy Mary, and Mar Lodge not what you had in mind? Have another well-known salmon fishing fly you'd rather have on your wall? Read up on our commission process, e-mail Bruce a JPG picture of the Scottish salmon fishing fly you'd prefer, and begin a conversation with him about commissioning a painting.
