Ring of Brodgar Stones
by D. Bruce Bennett
Ring of Brodgar Flowers
Swaths of naturalized flowers and colorful weeds guide your eye up to what guidebooks call a "massive natural cauldron" on the Ness of Brodgar. On it stands a portion of what's left of the Ring of Brodgar. A stone circle built by the last of the Neolithic monument builders between 2500 B.C. and 2000 B.C., it has only 27 upright stones left of its original 60 standing stones.

Light blue, white, and pale gray clouds billow overhead in this original artwork of the Ring of Brodgar, giving a light-hearted feeling to this ancient stone circle, which once may have been part of a much larger complex.
Some speculate the Stones o' Stenness (see our Stones of Stenness paintings, too) plus the Ring of Bookan plus the Ring of Brodgar were all part of a larger prehistoric grouping of ritualistic stone circles. Regardless, the Ring of Brodgar itself is bested in size by only two other stone circles (both in England) and covers almost 91,000 square feet.
Trying to include the entire ring in a painting that would fit into most of our homes just wouldn't do it justice, so Bruce focused on this arc of four standing stones from Brodgar. He's also chosen this vantage point down in the large ditch surrounding the ancient stone circle to give the viewer a better feeling of the height and isolation of this pre-historical and mystical Ring of Brodgar.
It's a good sized watercolor-style picture of Scotland, at 16" wide by 22" high. Once you've added a generous mat and frame of your choosing, it will become an impressive piece of Scottish Art reflecting the size and importance of one of mainland Orkneys prized features.
