Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Pittenweem East Harbor

by D. Bruce Bennett

Morning Sun and Clouds, Pittenweem Harbor

Morning sun rises in the low east-southeast, slowly adding light and warmth to a cool blue sky over Pittenweem, one of Scotland's most picturesque fishing villages. White clouds give the top three-quarters of this Scottish Art a rather Van-Gogh-ish sort of presence.

Bruce has allowed the yellow of the morning sun to wash over some of the stone cottages, coloring them differently than in his painting titled "Morning Sunlight, Pittenweem Harbor." The same sun's warmth gives a greenish glow to the low-tide harbor, the east harbor pier with its hog-back stone outcropping, and the Firth of Forth.

Located in the East Neuk of Fife, Pittenweem was established by St. Fillan in the 7th century. Using 21st century transportation methods, you can reach it in about an hour if you're coming straight from Edinburgh. Fourteen centuries of villagers yield a formidable number of descendents. Indeed, you may be reading this because you're discovered a genealogical link to Pittenweem.

Or maybe you’ve visited this lovely Scottish fishing village - since it's such a short hop from the capital - and want a memento. Beloved by photographers, both amateur and professional, it's seldom captured on film without hoards of tourists, cars, and other paraphernalia littering the view.

That's what makes this painting w-a-a-a-y better than a holiday snap. Pure ambiance and a little artistic license take you back to a place where you (or your ancestors) have been. Mat and frame this Scottish Art for your home's décor and enjoy this uncluttered view along the coastline of the East Neuk of Fife.
