Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Piper and Celtic Cross Gravestone

by D. Bruce Bennett

Callin' the Brothers, VII

A light blue sky weeps gently into soft pink around a lone Highland piper and Celtic cross gravestone. Isolated on a craggy hilltop, the subject in this original artwork exhibits Bruce's favored - and totally unpredictable - salt technique. That's what creates the "weather factor" you see in this picture of Scotland - much maligned for its unpredictable weather.

Paintings of Scotland: piper and Celtic cross gravestone

As you can see from the number in the title, this lone Highland piper silhouette has been a very popular image. (For more of the same, see Callin' the Brothers, V.) Each one has been slightly different in size, coloration, and the weather effect. Though the lone piper silhouette and Celtic cross gravestone are very similar in these "Callin" paintings, the "weather" - determined by what the salt-water-paint combo decides to do - makes each of them different.

This one has been sold, but Bruce would be happy to create something very like it, should you know a Highland piper who'd like to have something similar on his walls. A picture of Scotland with a different color of background? This same Scottish Art subject and style, but a little larger - or smaller? Take a look at our commission process and let us know what you'd like to give the bagpiper in your life.
