Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Highland Sword Dancer
by D. Bruce Bennett
Scottish Sword Dance
One of his earlier pieces of Scottish Art, this watercolor-style painting reflects Bruce's preferred method of painting Highland games competitors. He likes to leave the watercolor paper just as it comes from the factory, so that colorful tartans, like the one worn by this Highland sword dancer, receive their due against a soft white background.

While this original artwork has a light-hearted look and name - Scottish Sword Dance - that wasn't always the case. One legend says this very serious Highland custom originated as a pre-battle ritual, danced solely by men. If the selected warrior could dance a perfect sword dance before the battle, it was an omen of complete victory for his clan.
We don't know about that. But we do know that the omens are good that you would be successful, should you decide to ask Bruce to paint a similar Highland dancer, at an ever-so-slightly higher price. (It did sell three years ago, after all.) Take a look at the commission process and then e-mail us if you'd like discuss commissioning a picture of Scotland like this - to complement an existing Scottish décor or to begin fresh with a new Scottish theme.
