Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Glenluce Abbey Window
by D. Bruce Bennett
Glenluce Abbey Chapter House Window
Well, yes. We are stretching it a bit to include a stained glass window in our "landscapes" section. But it's part of an abbey, and abbeys are part of landscapes. So there. Anyway, it's lovely, isn't it? Vignetted stone masonry shows off beautiful stone window tracery outlining cornflower blue stained glass. It's a simply elegant picture of Scotland, and it's one of the windows of the carefully restored chapter house of Glenluce Abbey, rebuilt around 1500 and restored in the 1900s.

Glenluce Abbey is located in the river plain of the Water of Luce, just two miles from Glenluce village in Dumfries and Galloway. Decrepit and protected, it was originally founded in 1190/2 as a Cistercian abbey. Its history has almost completely vanished into obscurity, so we can't tell you much about this tracery, other than what you can see. It's obviously the work of gifted craftsmen. (No more than 15 monks would have lived, worked, and worshipped in the abbey at any given time.)
This original artwork, painted with acrylics in watercolor style, has become a lovely addition to a customer's home. But you could commission Bruce to paint a similar image of Glenluce Abbey to your own specs. Picture yourself sitting back and enjoying the tranquility it would reflect from its tranquil surroundings in the southeastern tip of Scotland.
