Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Eilean Donan Castle, Clan MacRae Tartan,
and Scottish Thistle
by D. Bruce Bennett
Eilean Donan Triptych
Two of the three images in this triptych of Eilean Donan Castle and its clan connections will appeal more strongly to you if you have one of these surnames in your background: Macrae, Mcrae, M'Rae, Crae, Cree, Macara, Macarra, Maccra, Maccrath, Maccrae, Maccraith, Maccraw, Maccray, Maccrea, Maccreath, Maccree, Maccrie, Mackereth, Macrath, Maccroy, Macgrath, Macgraw, Machray, Macra, Macrae, Macraith, Macrach, Macraw, Macray, Macrie, Rae, Raith, Ray, Rea, and Reath.

This quite angular view of Eilean Donan Castle would have been a familiar site to members of the Clan MacRae in the very early 1500s. Though Clan MacKenzie held the castle, Clan MacRae members served as its constables. The tartan in the lower right third of this Scottish Art is the "traditional" tartan for Clan MacRae.
The upper third is, of course, the ubiquitous Scottish thistle - Scotland's national flower. Your monitor may not show the very faint pinkish undertones to the light part of the sky over Eilean Donan Castle. They complement the pinkish purple of the thistle, and a thin gold line separates the three images.
If you have a clan tie to this most photographed Scottish castle, what would you like? Something similar to this, with Clan McKenzie tartan? Something taken from your own holiday snap (minus the carpark and tourists, of course)? See other Eilean Donan images on our Scottish Castles page for some ideas, and then tell Bruce what you'd like to commission as your very own picture of Scotland.
(Check our black-and-white print of Eilean Donan, too. Its $8 half-off price makes it a downright steal.)
