Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Dunnottar Castle Fields

by D. Bruce Bennett

Fields of Dunnottar

Unlike Bruce's Dark Dunnottar, his original artwork of Dunnottar Castle fields is light and cheery. Though one cloud is sending down a little rain, overall, it's a placid day and the North Sea appears calm.

Windrows lead the eye through the fields straight to the tops of the ruins of Dunnottar Castle. We see the square walls of the keep, built in 1392 by Sir William Keith - Great Marischal of Scotland - and a few other bits, but not much else of the castle ruins.

Paintings of Scotland: Dunnottar Castle Fields

Such calm belies Dunnottar's troubled, turbulent past. (See Dark Dunnottar for more about the history of Dunnottar Castle or a larger version of the same Scottish Art subject matter that's a bit more moody.) This picture of Scotland, however, is a very soothing piece of art work and helps us remember that the calmness of the everyday of today does, indeed, rub shoulders with the catastrophic past.

Mat and frame this Scottish Art just-so, to suit your own tastes. Display it on a wall where you can take in the peace and calm of this bucolic picture of Scotland - Dunnottar Castle and its surrounding fields - just south of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.
