Ghosts of Culloden Moor
Few Scots - or those of us with Scottish ancestry - can walk Culloden Moor Battlefield and not be deeply affected. Bruce is no exception. This picture of Scotland is a result of his experience on that eerie battlefield where 5,000 ill-equipped and under-nourished Jacobite Highlanders were defeated by 9,000 well-equipped and well-fed English troops on April 16, 1746.
The Act of Proscription followed shortly in 1747, banning the kilt, bagpipe, and claymore (large sword). Much blood-letting followed the battle, too, as English troops roamed the Highlands bringing surviving Jacobite supporters to "justice."
In this Scottish Art, done with acrylics in oil-painting style, Highland warriors - ghosts from 1746 - fill the sky over the windswept moor. Tall grasses, filled with thistles, belie the carnage that once lay here.
