Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Celtic Interlaced Knotwork
by D. Bruce Bennett
Ever Flowing, Ever Connected
Yes, yes. We know stained glass showing Celtic interlaced knotwork isn't a "landscape." But it's part of cathedral windows, and cathedrals can be part of landscapes. So, there you go. It does fit. (Well, not really. But where else would we put it??)
Regardless, you're here now, so let us ask you this. Is this Scottish Art reflective of 6th century superstition or is it simply clean, crisp, 21st century, minimalist design? We think the correct answer is, "It's in the eye of the beholder." How about you?

This square of Celtic interlaced knotwork, usually just called "Celtic knotwork," could complement a room devoted to portraying your Celtic heritage in a traditional way - or in a very spare, modern decorating scheme with no other hint of Celtic heritage. Take your pick; either way, this Celtic art will enhance your décor - as long as your color scheme is also gold and cornflower blue.
The blue stained-glass background is similar to the stained glass in Bruce's Glenluce Abbey Chapter House Window painting and is indicative of the scores of stained glass abbey windows we've photographed.
After seeing 14 centuries worth of interlaced knotwork incorporated into the architecture of Christian abbeys and cathedrals, most of us think of it as Christian symbolism. We should remember, though, that the Celts began using this trademark Celtic knotwork long before they were converted to Christianity, only later adapting it to their new religion.
Adapt this square little picture of Scotland to your home with just the right frame for your décor - simple and minimal or heavily ornate.
