Commissioned Scottish Art:
Airthrey Castle

by D. Bruce Bennett

Airthrey Castle – Remembered

This commissioned Scottish landscape art and its companion, Stirling Castle – Remembered, are examples of good landscape art, but they're also good examples of how our commission clients get exactly what they want.

Airthrey Castle during 1980s

But where in the world is Airthrey Castle? More to the point, why do we care?

Admittedly, Airthrey (currently housing the School of Law on Stirling University's campus) hasn't made it to the upper echelons of the Scottish castles must-see list. But you might care if you've traced some of your descendants, e.g. Clan Graham, to Airthey Castle; if you were born in it during its stint as a maternity hospital during World War II; or if you attended Stirling University.

Bingo: our client attended Stirling University in the early 1980s. After finding our Scottish art website, courtesy of Google, she emailed a washed-out photo from her college days, wanting to know if Bruce could work from her photo. "No problem," we said, "but wouldn't you like some of the current luscious landscaping painted in?" Nope, she wanted it the way she remembered it – reminding her that the dorms were in a sheep pasture at that time, since the university was barely 13 years old. She wanted to remember the sweeping view on a chilly, overcast, Scottish spring day – and how many times she traipsed across the hillside in its shadow.

Even if you've never heard of Airthrey Castle and don't care if you ever see it, we've added it to our website for a reason. (And it isn't because we're secretly members of Scotland's ad hoc tourism bureau.) It's here to let you know we paint what you want, exactly the way you want it – not gussied up to suit our tastes. It's all about what you want and why you want it that way. Take a look at the progression of Airthrey Castle on our client's proofing page.

Was our client happy with Bruce’s work? Read for yourself. Were we happy with it? You know, she was spot on: it's perfect – without all those pesky bushes and trees.
