Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
78th Highlander Soldier
by D. Bruce Bennett
Halifax Redcoat
Ever watched the 78th Highlanders reenactment drill team from Halifax, Nova Scotia? Then you recognize this 78th Highlander soldier with his Clan MacKenzie tartan kilt and the shorter (more kilt-friendly) version of the infamous British redcoat.

(Click for larger view of Halifax Redcoat.)
Originally, his red-and-white hose were cut from cloth, sewn up the back, and supported by a red tape garter. Look closely and you can see the fake version of that red tape in this crisply painted Scottish Art, with a pristine white background emphasizing its vivid colors.
Garrisoned at the star-shaped Halifax Citadel fort from 1869 till 1871, the 78th Highland Regiment was one of the most famous Scottish military units. Now, their 21st-century historical military drill squad, including the 78th Highlander soldier shown here, travels all over the U.S. and Canada, demonstrating its military precision. As its members work their way across a parade field at Highland games (with their original Snider-Enfield rifles) firing, re-loading, firing, reloading, you realize how well they must've kept order up Halifax way in the late 1800s.
We hope a nice, wide frame has been added to this nice-sized Scottish Art to create a show-stopping crimson-red-and-deep-green focal point in a living room, great room, dining room, office, or . . . .
Have some Clan MacKenzie blood in your genealogical tree? You’ll be hard-pressed to find a ready-to-go picture of Scotland with the Clan MacKenzie tartan built into it. Though this one has been snapped up by the Halifax Citadel Gift Shop, you could ask us about commissioning a simlilar one one that's very personally MacKenzie-ish just for you.
