Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Thistles and Highland Cow
by D. Bruce Bennett
Three Thistles and a "Coo"
This gentle Highland cow might like to take a chance on these three thistles, but it's highly unlikely she'll get her wish. This old mossy stone wall near Wick has been keeping Highland cattle where they belong for many years.

This is the fifth version of a Highland cow Bruce has painted. One never even made it past the first hour of a Scottish festival set-up. A very similar picture of Scotland, with five thistles and a Highland cow, is still available. (You might also want to check our black-and-white print of this Highland cow.) If you’re well acquainted with Highland cattle or even own a few, maybe you’d prefer to commission a painting of your favorite Highland beauty.
A simple black frame brings out the deep shadows of the post and stones, while the soft, gray-green mat emphasizes the ever-present moss of Scotland's ubiquitous stone walls. We've left a little white space between the mat and the image to give it a little "breathing room" in this animal lover’s picture of Scotland.
